Magic – Forcing Fate

1 March until 13 October 2024

Especially in difficult times, people have always endeavoured to exert a positive influence on their own existence. The pursuit of love, success or health is universal. Of the various strategies used to achieve this, religion and magic are at the top of the list. In contrast to religion, in which people find themselves in the position of supplicants, magical action is a technique that can be learnt, with which one is also supposed to be able to overcome the laws of nature in order to influence one's own fate in this world.

In the temporary exhibition, extraordinary objects from near and far shed light on this multifaceted topic: from the first indications in prehistory, through the most diverse forms of magical thinking in antiquity, the medieval and modern times, to the ongoing ›magic boom‹, not only in popular culture.
