In the conservation department of the State Museum of Prehistory, the archaeological cultural assets of the State of Saxony-Anhalt are looked after. Finds freshly excavated are examined and processed here as well as objects from the 200 year old and still growing collection of the State Office for Heritage Management and Archaeology, which are prepared for presentation in the permanent exhibition or one of the numerous temporary shows.
The archaeological finds that are impressively staged in the State Museum as a rule have firstpassed through the hands of experienced conservators. This applies to finds of all materials and material combinations as well as all periods. In addition to the ongoing work, temporary conservation projects are regularly carried out, examination results are documented, conservation and restoration techniques and restoration materials are developed and refined, and student’s papers and doctoral theses are supervised.
Current research results are published regularly in specialist publications. Often our colleagues also contribute articles tothe popular online series ›Find of the Month‹ which provide an insight into their ongoing work.
Here you will find some ›Finds of the Month‹ (co-)authored by the restoration team (German version only).
