The Elephant Butchering Site of Gröbern
125,000 years ago a sick bull elephant died in shallow lakeshore waters. Due to its weakness, the Elephas antiquus was no unreachable prey for human hunters.
In 1987, during lignite mining, the almost complete skeleton was discovered in the deposits of a silted lake. 27 flint flakes that were found between the bones, as well as the unnatural displacement of one tusk and several large bones are witness of the butchering by human hands.
