Closure and remodelling of the ›Passion for Bronze‹ section

From 5 August 2024, the ›Passion for Bronze‹ section (room 7) in the State Museum will be closed to the public – extensive renovation work is taking place in this section until presumably mid-2025. Access to the Nebra Sky Disc is still possible. We ask for your understanding.

Study of historical sources

What is history? Where does the information about bygone periods come from? Methods of historical research are explained and presented. The event can be tailored to the age and the learning objectives.

The Stone Age ›telephone‹

After a tour of the ›Palaeolithic‹ section of the exhibition, the pupils have the opportunity to make a thunder stick. We work with flint tools and natural materials.

Jewellery like in the Stone Age

A brief introduction to the Neolithic Age with a tour of the exhibition. Afterwards, the participants make their own jewellery from natural materials based on historic models.

The art of our ancestors

After a tour of the ›Palaeolithic‹ section, the participants can try their hand as artists. You have the choice between cave painting and engraving.

The sword – weapon and status symbol

We explore the exhibited weapons from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages. The pupils then learn all about the use of the sword and have the opportunity to test their own sword skills.

Baggy pot, butt, and bull

Guided tour of the New Stone Age exhibition section. Afterwards you can make your own vessels based on the ceramic models in the exhibition.

World views of the past – guided tour

What are the ideas behind the Sky Disc? What access do we have to the myths and rites of our ancestors? Suitable for ethics classes.

Age: contents are adapted to the age of the participants.

Stones, stones, stones – why the Stone Age?

During a joint tour we will explore the technology of flint working. In the subsequent production of a stone pendant, you can test your skills in handling this raw material.

Age: from grade 5.
Duration: about 3 hours.

With hammer and anvil

After a guided tour through the Bronze Age, the pupils can coin their own Sky Disc.

Historical cuisine – the diet and eating habits of our ancestors

What was there to eat, how were meals prepared, what herbs and spices were used? The pupils prepare meals that are typical of the time and are consumed together. Knowledge transfer that goes through the stomach.

Offers are available for the Stone, Bronze, and Roman ages as well as the Middle Ages.

Leather workshop

During a tour of the exhibition, the pupils become familiar with the handicraft skills of our ancestors and have the opportunity to make a leather bag in the Stone Age style.

The tears of the gods

Guided tour on trade, crafts and myths of the Bronze Age followed by an opportunity to design jewellery.

The genesis of gods and the magic of runes - The beliefs of the Germanic peoples

What did the Germanic peoples believe in? This activity will take you into the world of gods, amulets and magical signs. The pupils have the opportunity to make their own rune amulets.

Splendour and household goods

A guided tour gives an insight into the living culture of the Romans and the Germanic peoples and explores the exchange between the two cultures. Afterwards you can make your own pieces of splendour.

The Roman way of playing

Which games did the Romans have? After a short guided tour, we will craft a typical Roman morris game.

From urn to costume

This activity immerses pupils in the time of the Romans and Germanic peoples. Burial rites and attire of the Germanic peoples are shown using reconstructed objects. The opportunity of making silver brooches based on ancient originals will round off the event.

Ring workshop

The meaning and use of rings in the Middle Ages will be illustrated in this activity. You will design a medieval brass ring.

Rub the cat

Odd and exciting facts about the history of money. The pupils create a Geldkatze (›money cat‹, historical term for money pouch/belt) and fill it with coins they have minted themselves.

Evolution of mankind

Where do humans come from? Using replicas, models and the ›Palaeolithic‹ section of the exhibition, a guided tour and a museum talk explain the evolution of mankind on the basis of the latest scientific findings.

Age: from grade 8.
Duration: about 2 to 2.5 hours.
Costs: 3.00 € per person (including worksheet).

Astronomy – guided tour

From solar observatories to the Sky Disc. The beginnings of astronomical observations in Saxony-Anhalt.

Age: from grade 9.
Duration: about 1 hour.
